Instagram comment automations: reply and DM
Reply publicly to Instagram comments and send the commenter a private DM or start a flow, for all posts or specific posts and reels.
A comment automation answers comments on your Instagram posts and reels, and can message the commenter privately.
Before you start
- An Instagram channel connected.
- An available slot in your plan's automation limit.
- If you want to start a flow by DM, create the flow first.
Create one
- Open Automations > New automation > Post or Reel Comment (templates: Price questions, Giveaway entries, Thank every comment).
- Name the automation.
- Trigger: enter the word or phrase and choose a match type: Exact match, Contains, Starts with, Any keyword or Regex, or Any comment.
- Applies to: Any post or reel, or Specific posts or reels. Choose Add post to open the picker (Choose a post or reel, with Load more), select up to 30 posts, and choose Done.
- Public reply: the reply posted under the comment (up to 2,200 characters).
- Direct message: choose one:
- No DM
- Send a fixed DM (enter the DM message, up to 1,000 characters)
- Start a flow by DM (choose the Flow to start)
- Keep Enabled on, then Save.
Example: "Send me the price" campaign
Trigger Any keyword: price, cost, how much, info. Applies to the specific reel announcing your offer. Public reply: "Thanks! Check your DMs for the details." DM: Start a flow by DM with your pricing flow.
History and results
Public comment replies are reported in automation statistics. BaTimo does not provide a comment archive or comment-management inbox here; use Instagram to read the original comments.
A fixed DM or the opening DM of a flow appears in your Inbox with an Automation label and the automation name after its send is confirmed. Sending an automatic DM alone does not make a conversation unread. Until the customer responds, it appears under Waiting for customer.
Public replies and private DMs have separate results: one can succeed while the other fails. An uncertain send is not automatically retried, to avoid sending the same reply twice. Repeated delivery of the same comment event is temporarily suppressed.
Tips
- Always add a public reply so other viewers see the response.
- Use Specific posts or reels for campaigns and Any post or reel for general thank-you replies.
- Keep the DM short and give one clear next step.
Troubleshooting
- Posts do not load in the picker: check your Instagram connection ("Failed to load Instagram posts").
- The DM was not sent: Instagram allows exactly one private reply per comment.
- "Enter a trigger pattern, or choose Any comment": the trigger cannot be empty unless you choose Any comment.
Limitations
- Instagram allows exactly one private-reply DM per comment, sent within a few days of the comment. If the commenter never replies, that is the only message they get.
- Comments on live videos are not supported yet (shown as Coming soon).
- Comment automations count toward your plan's enabled automation limit.
